Elkins Estate Wedding | Amy and Ben: Sneak Peek

Braving the chilly spring air, Amy and Ben were married yesterday on the grounds of the amazingly gorgeous Elkins Estate…home of the Shoot the Shot Workshop.

The Monday that blurred right by me, a.k.a. The Shoot the Shot Workshop

Pay it forward.  That’s always been my motto.  And while others disagree with my philosophy…I’m all for sharing and helping and encouraging others to move forward.

When I started out I had tons of questions. Notebooks full of questions.  Questions that would have me researching on the computer for hours, reading copious amount of books, asking anyone that I knew.  Questions that cut my sleeping hours short since I can’t stop until I find the answer. And over the course of time I came to the conclusion that I had to figure it all out by myself…in order to do things the way that I wanted to do them…that super picky, amazing way that I’m accustomed to doing things. And it was hard.  It’s still hard.  What I find incredible, though, is that I open my inbox every day and find emails from peers that ask me questions…you know, as if I know the answer.  Oddly enough, though, I do — whether it’s the right answer or not, I don’t know…but it’s what has worked for me — and it makes me smile to know that I’ve helped someone and made things just a little bit easier for them.

So, one day in conversation over some soup and crackers, I giggled when I told Mike, “I should just host a workshop so that the newbie after me doesn’t have to reinvent the wheel.”  He didn’t laugh though.  Instead, he looked up from his bowl and said, “Do It!”  Much like he said when I suggested that I quit my day job to pursue this crazy dream of becoming a wedding photographer.  And so it was born.  The Shoot the Shot Workshop.  The place where I’ll share what I know, tips and tricks that I’ve learned along the way AND we get to do it at the ever gorgeous Elkins Estate. Half of the day will be centered around business and then after lunch we’ll recreate a wedding day complete with cake and an uber fabulous couple to photograph.  At first, I thought that it should be geared towards wedding photographers, but really, it applies to any type of photographer who’s trying to get a handle on their ever growing business.

So, if you wanna come hang, make sure you sign up.  Space is limited to 20 attendees and imagine my shock when spots actually started filling yesterday.

I promise you cake and good times :)

Monday Brain Dump

It’s been nearly a month.  I suffer from catnapatitis.  I sleep for maybe 2 hours at a time throughout the night and once Mike leaves for work at 3am…I’m up.  I’ve tried watching television to see if it will put me back to sleep…but nothing. It just makes me want to get up and buy that RediSetGo appliance so that I can get rid of all the leftovers in my fridge.  Or that crazy brownie cutter. How fantastic is that?!

Always having a notebook and a pen on my nite-nite table, I write.  I write what comes to mind. I write what needs to get done. I write blog entries. I draw poses for brides. I make lists…groceries, Target, cleaning, to-do. Then this morning, I wrote “brain dump.” And so, here we are. Brain Dump Monday. I’m of the mentality that if I write it down in a public forum or I tell someone something that I need/want/have to do, it kinda makes me accountable to actually do it. Sometimes that gets my into trouble though.  Case in point…The IMP Workshop (which that still haven’t decided if that should be the name or not).  I told Mike and Alli my idea one day on hosting a workshop to help all the newbies out there that are trying to break into wedding photography but don’t know how.  It was so incredibly hard for me and I had no idea what I was doing, where to turn, who to ask and I feel that I can help others by sharing what I know now.  They jumped all over the idea and screamed, “GO DO IT!” and I chuckled.  Then I told my nieces and sister.  Game over!  Now all I hear is…”when’s the workshop?!” Now I have to do it, right? So…I’ve picked a date, picked a location, have started my outline. Today, we start on building the website.  Nerve-wracking. Scary. Freaking me out. But I’ll do it!

Starbucks.  I love it. But I’ve quit it.  I’m hooked on two cups of coffee in the morning from my little sexy coffee maker and then I become all snooty and drink tea the rest of the day. LOVE it!  I’ve even resorted to using a fancy tea cup with a saucer. It makes me feel all fancy.

Outside right now the wind is howling. Like spooky, Halloweenie weather howling.  Preston and Steve woke me up this morning and said it was going to be 65…but raining.  Say what?! 65?! LOVE! I almost wanna bust out and wear shorts.  Almost.

I’m nervous for Elia.  Her finals start today. I’m so ridiculously proud of her. She’s been studying for weeks now…making index cards, highlighting like a fool, READING! Yes, people, my child read a history book and was spouting facts on WWII.  This weekend there was a whirlwind of friends and study groups here in my house.  There was such a good energy here…made this 1600 on her SAT’s momma very, very proud! Todays finals are Geometry (which was kicking her teeny waheeny at the beginning of the year) and History.  I’ll keep you posted.

NICO! He’s the STAR OF THE WEEK! So, this weekend we had to create a presentation board of Nico-Facts.  For sure a picture of the the Jedi Force and tales of the donut fairy were included.  He was so happy with how his board looked when we finished it up last night.

One of the lists that I’ve created is about an FAQ section that I want to introduce on the blog.  First up…Engagement Pictures — All YAY, no NAY! Be on the look out.

Finally, I’m a stalker. Yes internet…when I can’t fall asleep and I’m sick of looking at infomericals and reruns of America’s Next Top Model, I come downstairs and stalk. I had a friend ask me this morning how I meet other photographers.  Simple. I stalk them, read their blog, and then email them to say, “Hola!”  So..if you’re a stalker of mine…SAY HI! There’s a ton of people out there that I see on my hits and I wonder, “who are these people?!”  I promise I won’t bite…hard. hehehe. And yes, I know my desk is a mess.  And yes, that is a 3 Muskateers on there.  No, you can’t have any. Fefe…quit trying to read all the post it’s on my monitor (Fefe’s my niece. She’s awesome).  I have an obsession with Post-It notes.  I even got that “Things” application for the Apple and I STILL use Post-It Notes as if they’re going out of style. I have a drawer full of them.  It’s OCD.  Apple droolers…yes, that’s the 27″ iMac. It’s a DREAM and I LURRRVEE it!

So. Here’s to Monday!
